Placencia is a tiny, but beautiful peninsula in southern Belize and is accessible by land from the Southern Highway near the village of Santa Rosa. The 18 mile long narrow stretch of land begins in the community of Riversdale, continuing to Maya Beach, Seine Bight Village and ending at Placencia Village located at its southern most tip. The peninsula boasts 16 miles of white sandy beach with the Caribbean sea to the east and the charming Placencia Lagoon to the west facing the foot of the Maya Mountains on the mainland.
Placencia is essentially divided into two parts: South of the airstrip and North of the airstrip. The entire peninsula can be easily navigated on a bike. The busy part of Placencia lies in the south where visitors will find the greater concentration of coffee shops, bistros, internet cafes, the harbor, guest houses, taxi’s and bus station, banks, local restaurants, bars, and lets not forget freshly made Italian Gelato, all the things that makes it really “Barefoot Perfect”. The Northern portion of Placencia includes the Garifuna village of Seine Bight, it is less densely populated and has many of the higher end resorts. The water is clean and clear; the salty winds gentle and cooling with a calming Belizean sunset on a deserted Placencia beach.
Belize is referred to as “Mother Nature’s best kept secret” for no other reason that it is truly blessed with abundant flora and fauna, numerous adventure spots, white sandy beaches, lush jungles, ancient Mayan Ruins, not to forget the famous blue hole among numerous others.
The official language is English! It is the only country in Central America whose official language is English, though Belizean Creole (Kriol) and Spanish are also commonly spoken.
